Where am I now? First post, maybe a preliminary draft BTW.
Where am I now?
This title has so many interpretations, at least for me, since I often like to analyze something that someone said (and of course depending on the situation), so I start thinking beyond the most obvious interpretation, or what my wife use to usually calls: I like to complicate myself. Let's stick with English related things for now.
I have to be honest: I'm not where I'd like to be, but I know I'm on my way there. Since August 2020, I started looking for resources (free and paid) to practice english online. Of course We are still are in this pandemic situation that has us all on lockdown, or a partial lockdown actually, and thus We are able to leave our residences to go to work, or attending some places for first necessity reasons for example, but in this situation I couldn't attend a face-to-face course, because these activities can't be carried out, they're not allowed during lockdown.
But my decision of doing this online, has nothing to do with the lockdown thing, actually I've always liked taking online courses because the way I see it, It has more pros than cons. It's not just usually cheaper compared to the same face-to-face style course, but since it's online, you may find live-lessons at any time from anywhere in the world that fits your schedule or availability. So I enrolled myself on Rachel's English Academy on August, and I learnt learned lots of things in regard to pronunciation, intonation, syllable stress, contractions, and many more things and different techniques and tips to continue my journey. I'm not saying I learnt mastered it all that, of course not! I mean, there are more than 60 modules in her program, I barely reached the 12th, but I believe I lost motivation due to the platform itself, the interface, the structure and maybe because of the feeling that I was left "alone" by the teachers, I just didn't feel I liked it anymore.
So, during these last months, I also discovered on the meetup platform the My English Priority website from Gabby, and The Accents Way from Hadar, and I'm gonna give them a try and let's see what happens, while I work on a plan to tackle these points (and probably many more):
- Grammar related things:
- Prepositions
- Phrasal verbs
- Conjunctions
- Build vocabulary related to:
- Work life
- Eating & Cooking
- Drinking & Bartending
- Simple, urban vocabulary, to tell stories, give advice, have natural conversations.
- Conditionals
- Learn and improve pronunciation
- Speak faster without noticeable pauses.
- Take the IELTS
Why would I want to accomplish all this? I've always wanted to be a good communicator in english, I want to feel comfortable with this language. I actually would like to learn a couple more languages after English. Also, I like to learn things. It's my nature to be kind of curious and I've been stuck in this chapter for a long time, so It's time for me to go the next chapter regarding english. Let's say that, concerning to where I am in english, I feel I'm in the middle of my journey.
New vocabulary included in this post:
- To stick with
- Lockdown
- To attend
- First necessity
- face-to-face
- To carry out
- In regard to / regarding
