February. An update of the learning and practicing journey.

I know I said I was gonna to write and publish here, up to 3 times a week short stories about anything I wanted. It was a fantastic idea on how to push myself to practice something I always leave behind (and maybe everyone does It) when I start to think on the specific things I've to work on when it comes to learning English.

Now, I believe the point here is that at the beginning of January when I put some thoughts on my study plan I was still on vacation, and maybe I made a bad estimate of the time some other regular activities need, but I do know that I wasn't taking into account the fact that people get tired, physically and mentally during the day. Let alone the fact that each day may be different than the previous one, You might get out on time from work or not, You might run out of something You didn't notice yesterday, or suddenly You remember that urgent thing You should've done about a week ago, or just to balance things You decide to I think by now the idea is pointed, Life happens plus the "surprise factor" that may always comes up.

The most important thing I want to keep from here, is that even when things haven't always turned out the way I needed to follow my plan, is always up to me to do something about It, I've managed to do not everything but haven't stopped doing some of the task I've said I would. I could take an attitude of leaving the entire today's schedule for tomorrow because I couldn't start on time, but I could also decide to move on and do at least some tasks. Something will always be better than nothing (at least in this context) and consistency is part of creating habits.

So, I don't feel so bad for not being totally able of sticking to the plan the way I thought would be possible. It's obvious that some adjustments have to be made, to keep the plan realistic.

And now let's move on to what my Mon-Friday activities are. The content involved is in English of course:

  1. Listening an episode of a podcast while making breakfast. It usually takes me about 20-25 min.
  2. Listening to music while paying attention to the lyrics, sometimes singing in a whispered voice if I already know the lyrics. It usually takes me and hour to commute from home to work, so I alternate the music and reading a book with an audio if it's available.
  3. Practicing pronunciation of consonants, vowels, words, phrases... etc. This takes about 15-20min.
  4. Reading of looking up grammar or vocabulary related things, from a list I've written on Google Keep. It takes from 10-20min.
Keep in mind that just the last two activities might be seen as "tasks", like homework, like studying. The first two, are activities I might be doing involving Spanish, but since I like listening to music or reading, this is not like "making an effort", They are just things I like to do.

I expect keeping this rhythm, and as long as I improve my proficiency in English, I'll incorporate English in my daily life, the way Spanish is without the need to add tasks to a calendar. In the meantime I'm gonna help myself continuing creating the habits and practicing everyday even if I can only dedicate 10 min that day.

  1. This is great! at least ten minutes a day is a really good practice. Try adding five minutes every week!
